Discovering Mount Etna, the White and Fiery Giant

Elizabeth and James' passion for Sicily grows stronger each day. Today, the clear sky offers a unique spectacle: Mount Etna, majestic and snow-capped, stands in all its splendor, perfectly visible from Taormina.

Mesmerized by the breathtaking sight of the white, smoking giant, the English couple cannot resist the temptation to see it up close.

“Good morning, Marco! Look at that view of Mount Etna!” Elizabeth exclaims over the phone.
“It’s incredible! Can we visit it today?” James eagerly asks, excited for the unique adventure ahead.

We’re more than ready. With our chauffeur-driven car, we prepare for a new journey. Setting off towards Europe’s highest active volcano, we’re excited to give our guests an unforgettable day.

A Tour to Mount Etna: A Journey Through Landscapes and Stories

The drive to Mount Etna is an experience in itself. Leaving Taormina, we pass through landscapes that transform rapidly: from coastal lemon groves to hills covered with olive trees and vineyards, and finally to lava fields that resemble an otherworldly terrain.

Etna tour

“Look at those black rocks,” James remarks, pointing to the lava flows lining the road.
“Those are from past eruptions,” Marco, our guide, explains. “Each eruption adds a new layer to Mount Etna’s story.”

During the drive, Marco shares the legend of Enceladus, the mythical giant believed by the ancient Greeks to be trapped beneath Mount Etna. His fiery breath is said to cause the volcano's eruptions.

“It’s fascinating how myths and nature blend here,” Elizabeth comments. “You can really feel the magic of this place.”

First Stop: Rifugio Sapienza

Arriving at Rifugio Sapienza, at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, the scenery opens up to reveal its full beauty. The pristine snow blankets the lava fields, creating a stunning contrast against the clear blue sky.

“This is stunning,” Elizabeth says, snapping photos of the landscape.
“It’s like being on another planet,” James adds, marveling at the frozen lava flows.

Marco leads them to the cable car station, ready to take them even higher.
“From here, we can take the cable car to reach 2,500 meters. The view up there is even more breathtaking.”

Ascending to the Crater

Onboard the cable car, Elizabeth and James marvel at the panorama unfolding beneath them: a blend of white, black, and blue, with the sea on the horizon and the volcano’s summit drawing closer.

“This is incredible. You can see the whole island from here,” James says, thrilled.
“And look at the steam coming out of the crater,” Elizabeth adds, pointing to the plumes of smoke rising from the volcano.

At 2,500 meters, the landscape is even more surreal. A vulcanologist guide takes them on a short trek among the dormant craters, explaining the geology and history of Mount Etna.

“This volcano is alive,” the guide says. “It’s constantly changing, creating and destroying at the same time.”

Lunch with a View of Mount Etna

After the excursion, we return to Rifugio Sapienza for a lunch break. Elizabeth and James relax at a traditional restaurant, savoring local specialties:

  • Antipasti with cheeses and cured meats from Mount Etna.
  • Pistachio pasta for Elizabeth.
  • Red wine-braised beef stew for James.

“This food is amazing. You can really taste the flavors of the region,” James says.
“And the wine is fantastic too,” Elizabeth adds, raising her glass for a toast.

Visiting Zafferana Etnea: The Gateway to the Volcano

In the afternoon, we stop at Zafferana Etnea, a picturesque village on the slopes of the volcano, famous for its honey and local products. Elizabeth and James visit a local shop, sampling chestnut honey, jams, and artisanal liqueurs.

“This honey is so unique,” Elizabeth says, picking up a jar to take home as a souvenir.
“It’s incredible how the volcano influences everything, even the food,” James adds.

Returning to Taormina

During the return trip, the couple reflects on the day’s experiences.

“Today was unforgettable. Mount Etna isn’t just a volcano; it’s a world of its own,” James says.
“We’re so grateful for this experience. Thank you, Marco, for making it so special,” Elizabeth adds.

As we arrive back in Taormina, the sunset paints the sky in shades of pink and orange. Elizabeth and James bid Marco farewell with smiles that speak volumes: Sicily has left an indelible mark on their hearts.
