Shaoran and Akame Discover Marzamemi

Shaoran and Akame Discover Marzamemi: Between Sea, History, and Tradition

Shaoran and Akame continue their tour in Sicily, and after exploring Etna and Ortigia, today it's time for another Sicilian marvel: Marzamemi.

This morning, the sun shines high above Taormina, and our Chinese friends are waiting for us with their usual enthusiastic smile in front of the hotel.

The Pleasure of a Stress-Free Journey with Our Chauffeur-Driven Car

"Good morning!" exclaim Shaoran and Akame in unison as we get into our chauffeur-driven car.

"Ready for another adventure?" we ask.

"Absolutely yes! You told us about a small fishing village, right?" Akame asks, curious.

"Exactly. Today we’ll take you to Marzamemi, a seaside gem. It’s one of the most charming villages in Sicily, with its picturesque atmosphere and the bright colors of the fishermen's houses."

Shaoran nods. "Perfect! After so much history and mountainous landscapes, we want to breathe some sea breeze."

The Comfort of a Chauffeur-Driven Car

The trip from Taormina to Marzamemi takes about two and a half hours, but with our chauffeur-driven car, the journey is relaxing and pleasant. Along the highway, we pass the Ionian coast and share some interesting facts about the village.

"Marzamemi has ancient origins, dating back to the Arab era. The name itself comes from the Arabic 'Marsà al-hamam', which means 'Bay of the Doves'," we explain.

Akame takes notes in her notebook, as always. "So it's a place linked to the sea for centuries..."

"Exactly. It was once a fishing village, and even today, it retains an authentic atmosphere, as if time had stood still."

Arrival in Marzamemi: A Postcard Village

As we get closer, the landscape changes: expanses of vineyards and wheat fields give way to the blue coast and the first stone houses.

"Look, the sea!" exclaims Shaoran, taking a photo from the window.

We enter Marzamemi and park near the historic center, in the area reserved for authorized vehicles. This is the convenience of the NCC service: being able to reach the heart of the village without parking stress.

Piazza Regina Margherita: The Heart of Marzamemi

The first stop is the splendid Piazza Regina Margherita, the vibrant heart of the village. The stone houses, the little restaurants with outdoor tables, and the blue of the sea create an enchanting atmosphere.

"It's so picturesque!" says Akame, enchanted by the bright colors of the doors and windows.

"This square is the hub of village life," we explain. "It used to be the center of the fishermen's activity, and even today, you can still feel that authentic soul."

We stop in front of the Church of San Francesco di Paola, a simple yet charming building overlooking the square.

The Tonnara of Marzamemi: Stories of the Sea

We continue to the Tonnara of Marzamemi, one of the oldest and most important in Sicily. Today it’s a historical site, but once it was the nerve center of bluefin tuna fishing.

Shaoran observes the stone structure and the large anchors resting on the ground. "You can feel the hard work of those who worked here," he reflects.

"It was tough work, but the tonnara represented the life and survival of the village," we explain. "Today, during the summer, cultural events and musical evenings are held here."

A Stroll along the Seafront and Souvenir Photos

The Marzamemi seafront is a little paradise: colorful boats moored, fishermen mending their nets, and a scent of the sea filling the air.

Shaoran and Akame stop for a selfie with the sea in the background while we tell them an interesting fact:

"See that red house over there? It’s the 'Casa del Forno', one of the oldest buildings in the village. It is said that meals for the fishermen were prepared here during the fishing season."

Lunch with Seafood Delicacies

We decide to stop for lunch at a local trattoria. We suggest some typical dishes:

  • Busiate with fresh tuna
  • Seafood salad
  • Tuna bottarga
  • Pasta with sea urchins

"The taste of the tuna is so intense!" comments Akame.

"It's fresh and local," we reply. "The fish here comes directly from the fishing boats at the port."

The Sweetness of Sicilian Granita
After lunch, we indulge in a black mulberry granita at one of the kiosks in the square.

Akame smiles contentedly. "This is the best granita I've ever tasted!"

Shaoran nods. "It's true that in Sicily, food tells stories."

Return to Taormina

The sun begins to set as we head back. Marzamemi, with its ancient charm and authenticity, has truly captivated our Chinese friends.

"Every day we discover something new and wonderful," says Shaoran. "Thank you for bringing us here."

"You’re making us fall in love with Sicily," adds Akame with a smile.

And as we leave the village behind, one thing is certain: Marzamemi will remain in their memories, like a little dream by the sea.
